What are mutations in Grow a Garden?

Grow a Garden mutations alter the look and value of a crop. This rare event then increases the sell value of the affected crop.

Grow a Garden functions with a simple gameplay loop: buy seeds, grow plants, sell their fruits and crops, and use the cash to buy more expensive seeds.

You repeat this process until you're able to buy and afford seeds that produce taller plants to create a self-sustaining jungle that keeps growing while you're offline, giving you more to sell whenever you come back to buy new seeds.

Part of that process can be sped up by focusing on Grow a Garden mutations. Each crop has a base price. This is the price the shopkeeper will give you for each crop. Though size matters, as in a heavier tomato will fetch a little more cash than a small tomato, the best way to inflate the price of a crop is to mutate it.

Crop mutations can happen randomly, as in the case of Rainbow or Golden mutations, but you can have a little more control over the better mutations by simply being cautious with the seeds you plant.

While most seeds will produce fruits endlessly until you dig them up, others are single-use, requiring you to buy new seeds after each harvest. This can get needlessly expensive if you don't time things well.

By only planting these types of seeds during a powerful mutation weather event, like the Blood Moon or Thunderstorm, you'll boost your chances of getting Blood Lit or Shocked crops worth 25–100x more money. Suddenly, that expensive Cacao seed makes sense.

How do I know if my Grow a Garden crop is mutated?

There are several ways to know whether or not a Grow a Garden crop is mutated. With event-specific mutations, you'll often see a server notification appear at the top of the screen, as is the case with the Bloodlit mutation.

You can also see whether or not a Grow a Garden plant is mutated by hovering your mouse or reticle over the specific crop. This can be hard to do with smaller ones, but it's an option.

Most mutation effects are visual, too. In the case of Bloodlit, you'll notice a red mist at the base of the crop (in the case of something like bamboo), or a more consuming red mist in the case of an individual fruit or small vegetable.

Once picked, you should also note a crop's mutation via its name in your inventory.

Can Grow a Garden mutations stack?

Yes, crops can become afflicted by multiple Grow a Garden mutations at once, combining the rewards. Some, like Wet and Chilled, fuse to become Frosted, but others, like Blootlit and Frosted, can theoretically happen at the same time, multiplying the value of a crop even further.

Can you reroll or add a Grow a Garden mutation?

Unlike a game like Fisch, which lets you pay a small in-game fee to reroll a mutation on an item in your inventory, there's no way to mutate your own crops in Grow a Garden just yet.

Are there any bad Grow a Garden mutations?

Nope. No mutation in Grow a Garden will decrease the value of a crop. They can't rot, wilt, wither, or fail, so there's no way to make less than the base price on a crop, fruit, vegetable, or flower.
